Ever since Barack Obama took office, some conservatives enjoy snarling phrases like, "The liberals are ruining this country with their socialism!" Surprisingly, as a liberal, this doesn't offend me because I'm pretty sure the people wielding this verbal sword have little sense of what socialism really is.
To these people, socialism is communism's child who will grow up to continue the family business. It's a system where people earn the same wage and have only what the government gives them.
I believe socialism is about helping people in a way that maximizes individual freedoms.
As I researched socialism, I found that it actually promotes democracy. Because there are not as many gaps within the social classes, people have more opportunities and more influence in the government. In a capitalist system, the wealthy constantly have the upper hand; they can afford better educations and thus land higher-paying careers. Plus, the wealthy have more influence in the government because their money gives them political leverage. With capitalism, everyone is motivated by money.
In a socialist system, people are encouraged and able to pursue their own talents and desires. Instead of the rich becoming richer and the poor becoming poorer, the whole society flourishes. In a way, this system is more ethical than capitalism because workers aren't in it for the money; they are in it for the contribution to society. With socialism, compassion rules a community -- not greed.
If we stayed true to our democratic values, we would embrace the socialism I described. As Americans and therefore lowercase "d" democrats, we should want our society to progress to its highest potential. I am not saying that we should abandon capitalism for socialism tomorrow, but I am saying that socialism is not the travesty conservatives are making it out to be.
If President Obama says to me, "Karin, the government is going to pay for your health care and your education," I am going to say, "Thank you." I believe a government that provides for its people without oppressing them is a good thing.
Conservatives can continue attacking liberals by talking about the horrors of socialism, but they have to realize that we are not distressed by their misinformed rhetoric. A few socialist elements within the United States government will not bring communism to our country; it will provide for people who, with a little help, will greatly contribute to society.

The opponents to Socialism are right. God's children need not strive to be better to one another. They need not ask "what's in it for US" but merely "what's in it for ME." The true mark of patriotism is not how one shares with his fellow countrymen, but how well one hordes for oneself and's one's own interests. Money drives society toward the positivity of "the newest, freshest version of what you don't need." Capitalism urges the wonder and majesty that 95% of the wealth created by the population is controlled by only 5% of the population. Socialism is the evil that asks all to contribute to the well-being of the whole while capitalism is the shining good that says, "GET YOUR OWN."

Socialism dumbs down our young people and our elderly. Both believing the Government owes them something.

Democrats have frequently denounced the Republicans as Nazis due to their attempts to control runaway federal spending. Nazis weren't Republicans or "right wing" or "patriots" or "militias". They were Socialist monsters.
Please consider these quotes of the past.. because without the past we have no future at all.. We are a Republic not a Democracy (mob rule) It's "We the People" not we the Government.

Ms. Lund,
Your point of view is admirable. The fact you have taken the time to research this direction of thought, and taken the strength to say what you feel is a thing most people aren't willing to do, and it is encouraging. Congrats.
However, the essence of what a government controlled system offers will only lead to massive decreases in productivity, profitability, and ingenuity.
You see, all issues we face in the world are spiritual in nature. Every decision we have has a good or bad, right or wrong, better or worse. With socialism that opportunity to strive for the lead based upon social pride will not flourish the growth our world/country has experienced over the past couple of centuries (and will not flourish how your mind sees it).
People want to know, need to know, what is in it for me. Most people are selfish beings. People simply aren't outward enough in the general public to focus on others, so doing something for the good of the society will not result the same passion/drive as doing something that is good for the individual's pocket book. After all, money is just representative of the amount of energy we have placed into the world, and if there is no return for our energy, people won't place it out there.
In addition, the government is completely ineffective at controlling their own costs and managing their own systems. Look at social security, look at medicare/medicaid, look at any type of system the government tries to control beyond the things they were meant to control (through the Constitution) and you will see very poor results.
Competition encourages and increases ingenuity, productivity, efficiency, etc. Monopolies don't, and a government controlled society will become just that - a monopoly, telling people what to do and how to live. I value my ability to decide for myself, through liberty, much more than a perfected system of others telling me how to live.
So there is my two cents worth of thought, and I hope you find it valuable rather than simply contrary to your beliefs. With open minds we can proceed with greater intelligence!

To assume that socialism is a better political system than the most proven system the world has ever seen, capitalism, is simply ludicrous. In a capitalistic society money is the driving force, but not in a negative sense. Money drives the competition that allows our society to flourish. People work hard so they can earn money based on the fruit of their labor. They should not have high taxes forced down their throats in order for government to give handouts. Anybody with a brain knows that big business is not going to actually pay for the increase in taxes, that bourdon will lie solely on the consumers. This is exactly what the socialist agenda will result in.
The whole point of capitalism is that it protects the individual rights, not the rights of the majority as socialism does. Liberals act like socialism is the future, and I hate when they act like capitalism is stuck in the past, actually, capitalism has proven to be the most adaptive form of government. This is why America has become the world’s leader economically and the world’s strongest superpower in the brief period of time we have been a country. Why is this? Because in a capitalist society the individual and their rights are valued regardless of ethnicity, religion, or social class. Keep in mind the socialist, liberal, would have us subordinate the individual rights to that of what the majority deems correct.
Socialism is simply the little brother of fascism. Remember that at one time, in American history, the majority of Americans supported slavery, however, we as society overcame this atrocity because of capitalism's emphasis on individual rights. As written declaration of independence: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."
Had socialism been our form of government back then the majority would rule no matter what individual rights are established, and it would have been very hard to overcome slavery since the majority of people were not opposed to it. Socialism hinders individual freedom. It acts directly against the individual rights our forefathers deemed as unalienable. I for one am proud that I live in society that values the individuals’ rights and allows people to earn income based on the fruit of their own hard labor. Never should those who work hard be forced to redistribute the wealth. The result of a redistribution of wealth would destroy the American way of life, one which promotes freedom, hope, innovation, and quite simply provides the greatest way of life in our world.

Karin would do well to take Jay Leno's Man On The Street Quiz. Her entire work made up of nothing more than imagination. How about a real life example of where socialism is doing so well for it's people? How about that great gov't run health care? Astounding really.
